Changing Transmission Fluid is More Important Than Ever

  1. Older cars transmissions were very tolerant of late services and abuse. Older cars had 1,2,or 3 speed transmissions.
  2. Today’s cars have computer-controlled transmissions with electronic solenoids.  These transmissions have very small fluid passages, which can get plugged easily by dirty fluid.  Today’s cars have from 6 to 8 speeds. This means there are many more moving parts that transmission fluid is required to operate and lubricate.
  3. Most newer transmissions do not have dipsticks. The fluid level can be checked with Tire Worlds computers.
  4. Today’s transmissions require special fluids specified by the vehicle manufacture.
  5. The most modern transmissions are CVT Constant Velocity Transmissions. These transmissions do not change gears. These transmissions have an internal rubber/metal belt and pulley mechanism that gradually changes torque and engine drive wheel ratio. These transmissions require special fluid and maintenance because of the friction between the belt and variable pulley mechanism. This system gives superior gas mileage.
