Tire World's Tech Tips (5) click here to return to the list of Tech Tips Tips for Road Trips Are you contemplating heading for intriguing destinations via open highways this summer? Taos, Moab, Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon call to us. Disneyland/World, Sea World and historical spots are fun choices when we have children (or even when we don't). Rodeos, craft shows, conventions or just seeing the country and its sites have many of us anticipating road adventures. While you are brainstorming your plans on where
to go and what to see, have your Tire World mechanics go over the vehicle
you plan to take to ensure it's ready for the trip, too.

Kelly Tires asks, "What about heavy loads and high speeds?" In addition to recommending your tires be properly inflated, they say - In these cases, increase inflation. Add an additional 4 PSI (pounds per square inch) over the manufacturer's recommended cold tire pressure when carrying extra weight on long trips or traveling at higher speeds. Never add more than the maximum inflation limit indicated on the sidewall of the tire. However, never increase air pressure when tires
are hot. Pressure automatically builds as the internal temperature increases.
Check and adjust inflation only when tires are cool. The vehicle's springs and suspension system are important - especially when carrying heavier loads. The rear of your vehicle can sag when its suspension is weak or the vehicle is overloaded. Air shocks can be inflated for extra support and "overload springs" can be installed (see next paragraph). You might consider a product we offer that is revolutionary and stabilizes the suspension of your SUV, truck, RV or van. RollGard® Suspension Stabilizer by Amtech produces anti-sway around turns and curves while allowing greater steering control and overall vehicle stability. Find out more about Rollgard on our web site at www.tireworldinc.com/rollgard.htm . Plus you can ask us what we recommend for your vehicle and the trip you plan.
A clogged fuel filter can cause your engine to falter under a heavy load. Your windows and windshield need to be clean and clear to see the countryside as well as that semi approaching you from the rear. Cracks and chips, bugs and film can all decrease your ability to see. Remember to not cover up windows when you load what you need for the trip. It is good to get in the habit of monitoring coolant and water levels - in town or on a trip. Whenever you stop for gas, check your oil and coolant. Refill these as well as your windshield wiper fluid - as needed. Have Tire World perform a Maintenance Safety Check on your wipers, signals, headlights, windshield, brakes, tires, shocks, springs, etc. We can also check your coolant to see if it is ready for your trip. From the abundant letters of appreciation we receive from customers, we know many of you have come to trust us as your automotive service and repair source. Wouldn't it be better to have your vehicle inspected and any needed work done at your local service center before you begin your road trip adventure? |
