Tire World's Tech Tips (3)

Heat and Lack of Maintenance
are Transmission Killers

Every operating system in your vehicle includes functions to lesson the heat that builds while it is running. Heat comes from the road, the sun, your brakes, moving parts under the hood, exhaust, etc. Summer means these cooling functions must work even harder to dissipate the heat.

During cold weather, we tend to neglect checking over our cars. Make spring a time to get back into the habit.

How is your transmission oil? Heat kills automatic transmissions faster than anything else will. Preventative maintenance can mean definite cost savings in this area.

Despite and due to all of the improvements, newer vehicles need their transmission oil changed more often because they run hotter. High-end and even entry-level cars have electronically controlled transmission systems. These are more precise in their shifting, get better gas mileage and are more reliable. For instance, the fuel system has the same information the transmission needs for shifting.

However, electronic systems, smaller grill areas and hotter engine compartments are some of the reasons why transmission temperatures get so high in newer cars.

Excessive heat is the primary maintenance concern for electronically controlled automatics. Older transmissions usually operate at 175 degrees F and the fluid should last 100,000 miles. Newer transmissions tend to run at 215 degrees F, making the fluid's life expectancy only 25,000 miles.

Check your owner's manual for the recommended fluid-change interval on your vehicle.

Some typical signs of automatic transmission
problems are:

1. Car fails to shift automatically into the next gear.
2. Transmission jerks instead of shifting smoothly.
3. Transmission whines when the vehicle is moving forward.
4. Engine speeds up but car does not move any faster.
5. A oily, red puddle is found under the car.

However, don't depend on the above indications to tell you when your transmission oil needs changing.

See your Tire World professionals to look into the newer transmission fluid exchange services. Instead of leaving old oil in the hard to drain areas of your transmission, these use the new fluid to force out all of the old fluid. In addition, we can recommend certain additives that may help your transmission perform properly and last longer.
